Sportivate in North Yorkshire
Background
London 2012 Mass Participation Legacy
On 15th November ‘Places People Play’, the mass participation legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was launched, backed up by £135 million of National Lottery funding. The legacy will be delivered by Sport England, in partnership with the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association and the
London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will bring the inspiration and magic of a home Olympics and Paralympics into the heart of local communities, encouraging more people to get involved in sport.Under the ‘Play’ heading is a programme called Sportivate, a nationwide campaign that will capture the excitement of sport, providing opportunities for teenagers and young adults (aged 14-25) to receive no less than 6 weeks (and a maximum of 8 weeks) of coaching in the sport of their choice and guiding them into regular participation within their community.
Vision
To deliver, by 2015, 300,000 more participants aged 14-25 having taken part in a sporting activity of their choice and 120,000 of them being inspired by the power of sport and London 2012 to continue taking part in either the same sport or a different sport. In Yorkshire this means engaging 33,181 and more specifically in North Yorkshire 4,534 over the four years of the programme, with 1,814 of those continuing to take part.
Target Group
Sportivate will target exclusively 14 – 25 year olds. For the 14-16 year olds the programme is very much about transitioning them into club sport before they leave school but is strictly community based activity. This is crucial in reducing drop off at 16. For the 16+ the programme will grow the number of people (aged 16-25) doing more sport each week and will support one million people taking part in more sport.
Sportivate does not dictate a specific gender split, however consideration should be given to the fact that female participation is lower than male participation. In addition there is an expectation that Sportivate activity reflects local demography and takes account of key target groups, particularly those with disabilities.
Types of Activity
A broad definition of sport will be used for Sportivate although Sportivate should be seen as a sports programme. Projects should be able to demonstrate they have intelligence that participants want to take part in the sport, it can be provided locally and there is significant focus to provide suitable exit routes for participants to continue taking part.
Retention within the 6 week programme is a key aspect and Sportivate will place a greater emphasis on the transition into regular participation, with delivery plans naming the exit routes and also the ‘owner’ of the exit route.
Monitoring and Evaluation
The following 4 KPIs will be used to measure progress:
Participants, throughput, retain, sustain.
Information on the delivery plan process and reporting requirements will be issued at a formal launch event prior to 1st April, accompanied by a launch pack by North Yorkshire Sport.
Next Steps
A briefing and launch event will take place in March ahead of the commencement of the programme on 1st April 2011ahead of a full delivery programme being in place from July 1st onwards.
Any further updates will be issued through the North Yorkshire Sport e-newsletter which can be found on www.northyorkshiresport.co.uk
