Snainton v Heslerton
It was agreed to play a match consisting of 10 eight-ball overs per innings as the conditions were not pleasant for a lengthy match. Heslerton batted first on a cold and blustery Friday evening. The first pair was in fact a trio as Heslerton’s team had 11 players: Zach Davison went in with new comers Alex Lyall and Rhys Grange, the younger brother of captain Lewis. These 3 moved the score to 207 in their allotted 2 overs having only lost one wicket. The next pair was Thomas Atkinson and another new comer Shane Bulmer. They both scored runs for themselves and also took the team’s total to 220 without being dismissed. Abbey Frederiksen and Matthew Brown took the score to 232 and were unlucky to lose a wicket. Harry Watson and Jack Heslehurst who made up the next pair were the strongest batsmen on the night, hitting 5 lusty fours between them adding 21 to the team’s total. The innings was completed by the experienced Lewis Grange and Finley Booker and although they lost one wicket the score moved on to 260 in Heslerton’s allotted 10 overs.
Snainton were immediately on the back foot when Abbey Frederiksen clean bowled one of the opening pair with the fourth ball of their innings. This was followed by the only maiden of the match to be bowled by Harry Watson. It was particularly pleasing to see how well and enthusiastically the new boys Alex Lyall, Rhys Grange, Shane Bulmer and Matthew Brown bowled in their first cricket match. The innings was completed by Thomas Atkinson, Finley Booker and Lewis Grange. Thomas and Lewis both took a wicket each which helped restrict Snainton to a total of 233 and securing a win by 27 runs. A mention should also be made of Jack Heslehurst who looked very assured behind the stumps not conceding any byes and could well become an accomplished keeper.
This match was a very promising start to the season. The whole team was really enthusiastic, playing well together, for each other, and the older ones helping the younger ones. If this spirit continues through the season it will be a successful one whatever the results are.
