HISTORY

1^st May 1886, Heslerton versus Wintringham, was the first recorded match in the history of Heslerton cricket. The majority of the team were staff from West Heslerton Hall with the matches played in the Park at West Heslerton. A further field at Sand Lane Farm was also used before the present field became available at the turn of the century. The early successes of Heslerton cricket can be traced back to the schoolmaster, Mr S.S. Granger, who was head teacher between November 13^th 1905 and June 30^th 1911.He was a great cricketer and improved the quality of play by example and coaching. The club joined the recently formed Scarborough Beckett Cricket League after World War 1, winning the league championship in 1921 and retained the trophy during 1922 and 1923. A second X1 was formed in 1923, playing in the Derwent Valley Cricket League and but for the 2^nd World War have continual membership, being league champions on a further 8 occasions. The 1^st X1 currently have been champions of the Beckett League on 12 occasions, which is a record number only equalled by Cayton C.C. 1993 was a memorable year for the club winning twelve trophies and being adjudged “Club of the Year” by Ryedale District Council. Six of that team remain with the club, offering stability and encouragement, especially to the younger players, now with the 1^st X1 but also coaching expertise to the juniors. The younger members are encouraged to enjoy the sport and gain valuable experience within the Ryedale Evening Cricket League and the Pickering Evening Cricket League, while the juniors compete in the Derwent Valley under 15’s League with friendly fixtures arranged for under 11’s.
